After the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, there had been violent and deadly border clashes between the Missouri Border Ruffians and the Kansas Jayhawkers. This lecture will explore the legality, ethics, and morality of Order No. 11, which banished 20,000 residents from four western Missouri counties.

We will examine:

  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
  • The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
  • Vermont’s Habeas Corpus Law of 1850
  • Supreme Court cases: Abelman v. BoothPrigg v. Pennsylvania
  • U.S. Circuit Court of D.C. case: United States ex. rel. Murphy v. Porter
