The 1650+ Fellows of AAML are the leading family law practitioners in the industry who uphold the highest aptitude of knowledge, skill and integrity. They follow rigorous standards and uphold high ethical measures. We welcome all inquiries to those qualified family law practitioners interested in becoming a fellow of the Academy. 


Qualifications for fellowship

Practice Requirements
    • Practicing attorney, who has been admitted to the bar for a minimum of seven years. 
    • 75% specialized in matrimonial law, but subject to certain geographic areas and other exceptional circumstances. 

Continuing Legal Education Requirements 
    • Be Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney. 

Involvement in the Area of Matrimonial and Family Law
    • Demonstrate involvement in study or improvement    of matrimonial law, such as publishing articles or continuing education presentations.

Competence to Litigate Complex Matrimonial and Family Matters
    • Each applicant must have substantial trial experience as lead counsel, including the trial of matters related to custody, child support, division of property, alimony, or spousal support.

Competence to Settle Matrimonial and Family Matters
    • Must be willing to and be capable of settling cases in appropriate circumstances. 

Passage of National Exam 
    • Examination on wide-ranging issues pertaining to matrimonial and family law. 

Complete Interview
    • Be interviewed by a state board of examiners as well as be passed upon by other matrimonial law practitioners in the state.

Professional Reputation 
    • Be recognized by the bench and bar in his or her jurisdiction as an expert practitioner in matrimonial law. 

Adherence to the Bounds of Advocacy 
    • Aspire to the ethical standards set forth in the "Bounds of Advocacy" as well as state bar rules of professional conduct. 

Applying for fellowship

      • Complete the Pre-Application Form at aaml.org 
      • AAML will reach out directly to applicant with further information and instructions for next steps. 
      • Should applicant meet the Standard of Admission, then a formal application is sent. 
      • Following the submission of application and associated fees, applicant will be notified directly for testing date information. 
      • Applicant will receive further communication from NJ Chapter to schedule interview with its Board of Examiners during the application process.
